More Special Olympics

We won our second game and it was really satisfying to see some of the things that we were trying to teach in practice finally being utilized by the players. It seemed like they were starting to really feel comfortable out there.

The third game was our annual home game against the East YMCA. I have been to this game the last two years and every year I am in awe at the level of support that the Verona High School students support the Special Olympics Basketball team. They make our players feel like rock stars and they cheer like they are watching the Badgers play! We lost the game, but the team never quit and kept it fairly close until the end.

We were now ready to travel to The UW-Platteville campus for the sectional tournament. The day of the tournament we found out that our star player had come down with the flu and would not be playing. The team rallied and played the best basketball I had seen them play all year. We won both games and qualified for the state tournament in Oshkosh! It was a great tournament and everyone was psyched to be going to state for the first time ever. Unfortunately for the team, we would not be going to state for some silly and very weak reasons beyond their control. It was a terrible way to end the season for the players, but they should be very proud of what they accomplished and know that next year they will be even better. I know that I am proud of everyone on the team and I can’t wait to be back coaching next year when we go to state and win it all!  ~Back
